Tell us a little about yourself and your brand, 1018.
October 18th, 1996 was the day I was born. I decided to name the brand 1018 because to me the day I was born is a constant reminder that God gave me life and that my life has a purpose. To me these numbers are a daily reminder to keep pushing, keep striving, and pursuing my purpose. 1018 is a brand that I started to be much more than a clothing company. I want to be able to use this brand to empower others and help others find their inner love and purpose.
What inspired you to start your own clothing brand?
I have always been into fashion, art, and drawing since I was young. I would sketch different designs and draw for hours. I didn’t really pursue this passion later in life and eventually went to college. I started an online clothing store called K.Madison in 2017, I was excited to finally try and start a clothing brand. Honestly, I wasn’t ready, between work and school I was overwhelmed. I wasn’t ready to put in all the work and really focus on my brand. After graduating I still didn’t feel fulfilled or feel passionate about what I was doing. So I decided that after graduation I would pursue what I really wanted. I decided not to waste anymore time and simply go for it! Here we are today.
What makes 1018 unique?
1018 is unique because it is true to me, it is inspired by everyday art and life. It is inspired by the music I listen to, the books I read, the movies I watch, places I have been, it embodies so many experiences. I take all of this and put it into these clothes and it is amazing to see what it becomes. The items in this collection were inspired by songs I would listen to during the time I was trying to create ideas. My “Just Got Paid” and “Full Moon” sets were inspired by ideas I created while listening to these songs and imagining what I would wear if I were apart of that moment. Walking into the club seeing a really cute guy and it being one of those nights. Creating this scene in my mind helps me create this design.
Name a challenge you’ve faced throughout your journey of building your brand? How did you overcome it and RISE?
When I first started my brand, a challenge I faced was networking. I am a shy person and don’t really talk much when I am in a new and unfamiliar space. Starting this brand has forced me to step out of my comfort zone and network with new people. I have to represent my brand everywhere I go. If I am in the store and someone tells me they like my purse or something I have on. That is a moment that I can use to tell them about my clothing line and build a new relationship. I have to strike up conversations with strangers and that is normally something I wouldn’t do. I have overcome this by joining events, seeking out opportunities to work with new people, and practicing it in my personal life.
What advice would you give to someone who is aspiring to start their own clothing brand?
My advice would be to know what you want to do and don’t be afraid to do it. If you have a wild and crazy idea, do it! It’s only wild and crazy until someone does it. Being different is what will make your brand different. You don’t have to be for everyone. Don’t be afraid to start it because you think people won’t buy your clothes or there are too many people already doing it. If this is your passion and you put the work in, then you will see the results. You will get discouraged and things will go wrong but don’t ever stop. Also don’t be afraid to make mistakes! We are all human and it happens.
